All available evidence points to the fact that any hardware bolted or screwed to a drum shell alters the tone and frequency response of the drum.
The natural frequencies are choked, and the pitch of the shells becomes higher.
The Z Drums Free-floating snare eliminates all hardware contact with the shell.
This allows the shell’s natural tone to be heard clearly and defines the overall sound of the snare drum.

The outer hardware ring not only holds the strainer/trow off, but also all the double-ended tube lugs, making it a solid one-piece tuning system that has no contact with the shell at all. The result of this system is that all lugs are now responding to each other, and the pressure put on by the rods is now being distributed around the hoops, instead of multiple points of pressure being established.
This mimics the classic Welsh Tuning System, which doesn’t allow for multiple tension spots around the head, which in turn improves the tuning greatly.

Perfect tuning, effortless and without any aids.

The top and bottom heads are now connected, which regulates the tension between the two, giving you the perfect relationship in tension that cannot be achieved by hand-tuning both heads separately. The difference in head thickness gives the exact interval needed to produce the perfect snare sound without the need for tuning aids or tapping endlessly around the perimeter of the heads.

If you prefer a bigger or smaller interval between the heads, then you can fit different types of heads.
For instance, a double ply head (2×7.5mill) will give you 15mill for the top and 3mill for the bottom for a greater interval.
Or a single-ply 10-mill batter with a 4- or 5-mill resonance head will give you a smaller interval.
