Z Drums Free-floating snare made with an Olivewood stave shell. A dense Olivewood stave shell produces a tone that is deep, woody, and richly textured, with a natural compression that keeps the attack tight and controlled. At 6″ depth, the drum balances crack and body, giving you a punchy midrange with a warm, resonant low‑end bloom.

Because the shell is fully free‑floating, its natural resonance is completely unchoked, and you will get a more open, harmonically complex voice compared to mounted shells

No equalisation, but harmonisation

The fear of equalisation of the heads is not supported by the fact that this is a tried-and-tested system from Z Drums. The top and bottom heads are now responding better to each other, and the tension and tone are harmonised between them. This results in a better overall tone, tuning and response of the snare as it should, while giving a stable sound at the same time

Bearing Edges – Hybrid Rounded/45°

This snare features a hybrid bearing‑edge profile designed to maximise both warmth and sensitivity.
On the top edge, the outer side is rounded while the inner side is cut to 45°. This combination produces a full, woody body with a clean, articulate strike, giving the player both warmth and definition in every dynamic range.

The bottom edge is the reverse: a 45° outer cut paired with a rounded inner transition. This configuration enhances snare‑wire response by tightening the contact zone while keeping the shell’s natural resonance open and musical. The result is heightened sensitivity, improved snare clarity, and a balanced decay that avoids harshness.

Together, these opposing profiles create a drum that feels alive, expressive, and highly responsive, with a seamless blend of warm tone, focused attack, and snare detail—perfect for a free‑floating Olivewood stave shell where every nuance matters.
